Who qualifies for a free eye exam (free sight test)

Routine Eye Exam

Our fully qualifed Ophthalmic Opticians (Optometrists) have many different methods of assessing the well being of your eyes and health in general. Did you know that the back of the eye is a regarded as a ‘window of general health’? This is because general health issues such as Diabetes and Hypertension can be detected by examination of the eyes. It is difficult listing what an eye exam consists of as each eye exam will be tailored to Patients’ individual needs.

Corporate Eye Exam

We accept Eye care plans and alternative plans for VDU screening. Our Optometrists will assess your eyes and determine if any correction is needed for comfortable VDU use. Along with this they will advise you on how to stay comfortable with VDU screens throughout your working day

Employers need to observe the Health and Safety (DSE) Regulations 1992. Employees covered by the regulations include those who use VDUs (computers) for a ‘significant’ part of their working day. Below is a paragraph from Health and Safety Executive website;

(Employers need to) On request arrange eye tests, and provide spectacles if special ones are needed.
Employees covered by the Regulations can ask their employer to provide and pay for an eye and eyesight test. This is a test by an optometrist or doctor. There is also an entitlement to further tests at regular intervals; the optometrist doing the first test can recommend when the next should be. Employers only have to pay for spectacles if special ones (for example, prescribed for the distance at which the screen is viewed) are needed and normal ones cannot be used.

Therefore if you use computers for a significant part of your working day, your employer should fund a VDU eye exam for you. Also if you need spectacles for computers they may help fund them.

We accept Eyecare Vouchers as payment towards sight tests. These may be obtained from your HR department.

Domiciliary Service

Most of our long term Patients have got to a ripe age and find it difficult to get to the Opticians. We therefore started our domiciliary eye exam service and can come to see you at your home. Please note that this is a free service but the NHS does require that you are housebound.
